Some drugs may aggravate and not prevent acid reflux conditions. NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (including recognized brands such as Motrin, Nuprin, Advil, and Aleve), appears to negatively influence this condition.

This is according to a recent study that found that people who regularly took these drugs was virtually twice as likely to experience symptoms of acid reflux.

Asthma and diabetes are two other potential factors. At least half of all asthma sufferers experience heartburn, although research has not yet determined which disease influences the other.

Finally, diabetics often suffer from gastroenteritis a condition that causes a delay in emptying of the stomach and acid waste  in the esophagus.
